Special Services
Family Planning
Contraception can be discussed with any doctor or you can attend our Sexual Health Drop-In Clinic every Tuesday between 2.00-4.00pm. Follow-up appointments for contraception can be made with the practice nurse. We also fit and remove implants, Nexplanon, and you should make an appointment with one of the doctors to discuss this.
C:Card
We are a C:Card point for people aged 16 and over who want free condoms. These can be collected from reception at any time. C:Card is an NHS Lothian sexual health service.
Cervical Smears
These are done every three years for women aged 25 to 64. Appointments can be made with the nurse or you can attend our Sexual Health Drop-In Clinic every Tuesday between 2.00-4.00pm. Smears can also be done by Family Planning Services based at Dean Terrace who offer evening appointments. A central computerised recall system is in operation across Scotland (SCCRS), and women should receive an invitation to attend for a cervical smear.
Child Health Care
Baby clinics are run by the health visitor and paediatric staff nurse on Thursdays between 11 and 12 (last weight at 11.45) at Conan Doyle Medical Centre. The health visitor offers advice on child care, including baby weighing. No appointment is necessary for the Thursday clinic. Vision checks on babies and young children are organised by the health visitor.
Health Visitors
The health visiting team is based at
Conan Doyle Medical Centre,
4 Nether Liberton Lane,
Edinburgh EH6 5TY.
Telephone 0131 666 5175.
If calling, please leave a short message with your child’s name and date of birth and someone will get back to you.
Hours of work are Monday-Friday 9-5. We are closed on NHS public holidays.
Health visitors are nurses or midwives with additional training in health visiting. We offer support to families by promoting health and development and monitoring growth. We can support with issues such as feeding, sleeping, toileting & behaviour. Appointments usually take place in a family's own home.
Someone from the team will contact you if your child has recently registered at the GP practice or you have just had a baby. You may also be contacted in the last trimester of pregnancy by your health visitor to introduce themselves and the service.
If you have any medical concerns about you or your child, please seek appropriate medical attention by calling your GP practice. If out of hours, call NHS 24 on 111. In an emergency please call 999.
Immunisations are no longer carried out by health visitors. Please contact the community vaccination team on 0131 312 1860 if you have any vaccination appointment queries.
