Student letters
Student letters
If you have not been seeing a GP and it is not an ongoing problem (ie. not chronic mental health problem) we are unlikely to be able to provide a letter and you should complete a self-certificate available on the Universtity website.
Sickness Absence
Letters are not required for absences of 7 days or fewer. If you require further time off after the first 7 days you should discuss this with a doctor.
This includes absence for exams. We are unable to provide letters for exam absence in retrospect, if we have not consulted with you at the time of the exam.
Deadline Extensions
You can apply for a deadline extension through the University of Edinburgh website. You do not need to provide medical evidence for this.
Special Circumstances
You should first speak to your personal tutor about an application for special circumstances.
You should apply through the University of Edinburgh website. You may need to provide medical evidence for a special circumstance application. Counsellors, mental health mentors and other specialists can also provide medical evidence. You can also complete a self-certification form about your ill-health if you have not been seeing a GP about your problem.
If you require medical evidence, you should make an appointment with your usual GP to discuss.
Disability Service Support
If applying for support from disability service, they should provide you with a form for a GP to complete. You should discuss this request with your usual GP
We cannot send any correspondence via email. You will need to collect this from reception. It can take up to 7 days for letters to be produced. There may be a charge for letters as this is not NHS work, this may be waived at the doctor’s discretion.
